Feisty, Fierce, Loving

Breed Overview

The Yorkshire Terrier was bred in Yorkshire England during the 1800s. Known as “Yorkies”, these small dogs were bred to hunt and kill rats in factories. They are great alarm systems and protective of their environment. Although small in size, they have a fierceness that is uncanny. A critter will not enter your yard unnoticed while a Yorkie is on patrol!

Today, they can be seen strutting in show rings or carried in fancy handbags. A Yorkie is smart, confident, spirited, and lively. They are lovable lap dogs who insist on being coddled by their owner all day. Extremely affectionate, they require more human companionship and attention than any other breed.

Life Expectancy

The Yorkshire Terrier has a life expectancy of 12 to 16 years.

Size & Activity Level

A Yorkie will range in size from 4 to 8 pounds. They are part of the Toy Group. Yorkies can have most of their needs met through indoor play. A daily walk or romp in a fenced-in yard would be a special treat. This breed is very well suited for apartment life. Quick to learn they can become willful and make training difficult. Consistency and firmness is necessary. Puppy school is recommended to nip any unwanted behavior.

Care & Grooming

The Yorkshire Terrier will require frequent grooming. Unlike other breeds which have fur, the Yorkie has long silky hair that grows constantly. They have no undercoat and do not shed. Yorkie puppies are born black and then start to lighten within the first year.

Since they small, grooming and bath time will not take up much time. Yorkie hair should be kept out of its eyes using a rubber band or a bow. This always adds to their cuteness.

A good diet high in protein is recommended for optimum health. Maintaining a good weight will promote longevity. Keeping teeth clean is also important.
