Elegant, Alert, Playful

Breed Overview

The Whippet is a medium-sized sight hound originating in 18th Century England. For one thing, their strong small prey drive makes them a rabbit’s worst enemy, and their speed made them popular for racing. Needless to say, this all-purpose breed loves to compete in all manner of dog sports. A Whippet is a hunter when outside, but will be a snuggler when home. A sweater or coat is needed for walks in the cold as they are quick to chill.

Children love playing with Whippets because of their perfect size and the feeling is mutual.  Notably, these calm house dogs are affectionate pack animals who love lots of company. Sighthounds are emotionally sensitive to those around them and don’t handle stress well.  This independent thinker can usually be found lounging in a soft spot under a blanket with his favorite companions close by.

Life Expectancy

The life expectancy of this breed is 12-15 years.

Size & Activity Level

The Whippet is a hound who comes is a wide range of weights ranging from 18-48 pounds. However, most will range between 25 and 35 pounds. Whippets tend to be low energy indoors, but need daily opportunities to exercise and vent their energy. Whippets love a good chase game. With that being said, never trust a Whippet off leash as they will chase any small animal to cross his path. For starters, make sure your fence is secure since they can reach speeds up to 35 mph.

Care & Grooming

A fine coat and thin skin make the Whippet low maintenance pet to groom. Consequently, they are susceptible to scrapes and nicks. These dogs are light shedders and rarely need baths. Basic routine grooming will suffice for this breed. As a sighthound, they are sensitive to anesthesia, therefore, consult your vet before any procedures. Socialize your Whippet early to avoid a timid or overly sensitive temperament and you will be rewarded with a great family pet.
