Soft Coated Wheaton Terrier Breed Overview

The Soft Coated Wheaton Terrier originated in Ireland. In fact, it is possible they are one of the oldest Irish breeds. They are well known to work on farms as herders and hunters of small game and vermin. Hence, they were owned by the working class of the time. Nowadays, their sweet temperament and loving personality make them good companions for all types of families. Generally, they are not aggressive, while being patient with children, other dogs, and animals. However, being Terriers, they are big time chasers due to their strong prey drive. Wheatons are overall friendly and protective enough to be a good watchdog.

Soft Coated Wheaton Terrier Size & Activity Level

A Soft Coated Wheaton is a medium-sized dog, averaging 35 to 45 pounds. They are part of the Terrier Group. These dogs are know for their high energy, and notorious jumping. A secure high fence is vital for their safety.  Granted they are spunky and cheerful, but also headstrong. With that said, they need a good amount of attention. Most importantly, early training and socialization is necessary to maintain control. Families and singles do well with this breed. Also, apartment living will work out fine with a few good walks per day. 

Care & Grooming

An important fact to mention, Wheatons do not shed and are considered hypoallergenic. However, they will need brushing a few times per week. A point to note, their hair is long and silky which is prone to matting. A shorter Terrier hair cut trimmed to about 3 inches will be helpful to maintain appearance and a healthy dog. Bathing is usually every other month. Ear cleaning and nail trimming is a monthly task.

Significantly, adults should be fed a balanced diet with restricted calories intake to prevent health issues. Also noted, puppies are born with a dark brown nose and face. Coats are a dark brown.
