Breed Overview

The Scottish Terrier was bred in Scotland for hunting prey such as badgers and foxes. Most often black, a Scottie may be gray, brindle, or wheaten in color. This little dog is a true terrier, independent and confident as well as smart. His tendency to act aloof with strangers is not for everyone’s taste. On the other hand, they make loyal affectionate companions for a family. A Scottie has a temperament that wants to be your partner, not your servant.

The Scottish Terrier has won the Westminster Dog Show a record eight times. He makes a great watchdog who will instinctively bark at strangers. He has a powerful bark for his size, often surprising visitors. This is a working dog who loves having a job to do and keeping busy.

A Scottie’s high self-esteem and dignity makes respect training a must. Praise and food based training work best with this sensitive breed. If you are lucky enough to bond with a Scottie, you will have a friend for life.

Life Expectancy

The life expectancy of the Scottish Terrier is 12-15 years.

Size & Activity Level

Your Scottish Terrier will grow to a weight between 18-25 pounds. Their very short legs and sturdy bodies are great for walks, as long as they are not expected to run a marathon. They were meant to hunt and follow prey to ground, therefore a Scottie will love to dig holes in your yard. This high prey drive causes them to chase any small animal crossing his path.  He definitely will require a secure fence and leashed walks.

Care & Grooming

A double coat that continuously grows makes for low shedding. Scottish Terriers have sensitive skin that dries out easily, so keep bath time to a minimum. Look out for tangles in the undercoat, and check the beard for leftovers after feeding. A Scottie’s short legs and heavy body makes him sink like a stone. For this reason, extreme care must be taken around water. Also, they have harsh reactions to fleas, so be sure to address flea prevention with your veterinarian.
