Labradoodle Breed Overview

In 1988 an Australian breeder crossed a Labrador Retriever with a Standard Poodle. Hence, the Labradoodle was created. The Royal Guide Dog Association of Australia in Victoria was the recipient. The full intent was to create a suitable guide dog for people with allergies to fur and dander. This is a highly intelligent dog, needing mental stimulation and training. The life expectancy of the Labradoodle is 12 to 15 years.

Labradoodle Size & Activity Level

There are 3 sizes to this mixed breed:

• Standard - 50-65 pounds, Standard Poodle with a Labrador Retriever
• Medium - 30-45 pounds, Miniature Poodle with a Labrador Retriever
• Miniature - 15-25 pounds, Toy Poodle with a Labrador Retriever

These "Doodles" are people pleasers. They need a good amount of exercise each day. Spunky, active, and happy personalities make them a delight. Apartment living is not suggested as a large secure yards work more in their favor.

Care & Grooming

Doodles are considered low-shedding. However, since they are a mix, traits can vary. Poodles do not shed, but Labs are heavy shedders. Colors vary to an exotic array of reds, creams, blacks, and also parti colors. Grooming depends on coat length. In general, expect to brush him several times per week. Bathing is only "when necessary", while nail trimming and ear cleaning is monthly. Ultimately, they are an overall healthy breed.  Always contact your vet for more information.
