Confident, Alert, Cute

Breed Overview

The Pembroke Welsh Corgi gets its name from the birthplace of Pembrokeshire, Wales. Often referred to as Corgis, they traveled to Wales with the Vikings.

Though originally used as guard dogs and hunters, they were later trained to herd cattle and sheep.

They are independent workers, bred to move cattle from one place to another. And they do very well with children and other pets.

A favorite breed of Queen Elizabeth II, she reportedly has more than a dozen pet Corgis.

Pembroke Welsh Corgi

Life Expectancy

The Life Expectancy of a Pembroke Welsh Corgi is 11-13 years.

Size & Activity Level

The Pembroke Welsh Corgi will mature up to 30 pounds.

Considering they are small dogs, they exude a lot of energy. Athletic and surprisingly fast, these dogs need a healthy amount of exercise each day.  That said, they make fine apartment dogs as long as they get the physical stimulation they need.

Care & Grooming

Pembrokes are double-coated. They have a thick coat that is water-resistant but they shed continuously. Shedding heavy will come at least twice a year. They should be brushed regularly to remove dead hairs. Bathe only when necessary, but most find bathing helps control the shedding.

The Pembroke’s long body shape makes it susceptible to spinal problems and arthritis. These dogs love to eat. Obesity in the Pembroke Welsh Corgi can lead to serious health conditions, so proper nutrition and exercise are critical. Consult with your vet or breeder for the nutrition advice.
