The Papillon breed belongs to the toy group and is a descendant of the miniature Spaniel. They can be traced to 15th century France aristocracy. The name is French for “butterfly” and refers to their beautiful ears. This tiny dynamo has no self-awareness of his size, often putting themselves in big dog situations they can’t back up.
Paps are lively, energetic, and active. In addition, this breed is clever, attentive and highly trainable. Their outgoing personality shows in their love of living in a multi-pet home. The Papillon is friendly and playful with children but needs to be monitored to keep them safe.
For more on the breed check out the American Kennel Club.
The Papillon has a long life expectancy of 12-17 years.
Size & Activity Level
At a mere 4-9 pounds, the Papillon is a tiny go-getter. Paps need frequent mental and physical stimulation to keep them satisfied. They mimic mountain goats’ love of climbing and will climb on anything. A good Pap is a tired Pap.
Care & Grooming
A long, flowing single coat is relatively easy to care for. Give extra attention to those butterfly ears as they tend to matt. Be aware of how fragile these puppies are, taking care to keep them safe.
