The Miniature Schnauzer originates in Germany during the late 1800s. The word “Schnauzer” is German for nose or snout. They have excellent noses for sniffing out vermin.

This breed is even-tempered and an intelligent learner. Therefore, they are easy to train. They make a great companion and family dog. Barking can be annoying, so early training is necessary. Miniature Schnauzers make great watchdogs since they are very alert and always on the job.

These dogs are less dog-aggressive than most other Terriers. The Miniature Schnauzer is robust with a sturdy build. Playful, loving and affectionate, these dogs are good with children and other household pets. She’s got personality-plus. You’ll never be bored with her around. They are part of the Terrier Group.

The expected life span of the Miniature Schnauzer is 13-15 years. Overall as a breed, they have few health issues.

Size & Activity Level

The Miniature Schnauzer is a small dog, ranging in size from thirteen(13) to sixteen(16) pounds. They are just the right size to take a road trip with you.

Her energy and personality far exceed her size They enjoy playing in the yard and going for long, fun walks. Well-suited for either city or country living, these dogs do fine in either place.

Care & Grooming

The Miniature Schnauzer has a medium-length coat which is wiry. They do not shed and will be a favorite pet among asthma sufferers. Regular trimmings and occasional baths will keep them looking spiffy. The long facial hairs, or mustache, should be clipped every few weeks. Many owners prefer to have them professionally groomed to keep their smart looking haircut intact.

Ears should be checked weekly for redness or a bad odor, which can indicate an infection. Nail trimming once or twice a month will help to prevent problems.

The quality of their dog food also makes a difference. Better dog food will enhance your dog’s life and minimize her risk for illness.
