Breed Overview

The Mastiff is an ancient British breed believed to be 5,000 years old. They were ferocious fighting dogs used by the Romans.

During the Middle Ages, they remained popular guard dog and hunter for nobility and peasants tending their livestock. The breed was almost extinct but survived when it arrived in the United States and Canada after WWII. The breed is part of the Working Group.

 They are also protective and loyal to their family with imposing demeanors.  A born guard dog, the Mastiff rarely barks, but its his nature to defend his territory and family. A Mastiff does not need to be trained to guard. These dogs are patient, docile, and excellent with children and other pets when properly socialized.

The life expectancy of the Mastiff is 9-11 years.

Size & Activity Level

Mastiffs are powerful, giant, muscular dog and one of the world’s heaviest breeds.They range in size from 130-220 pounds.

The Mastiff tends to be a lazy dog. Considering his large size he can be slow moving.  A small fenced yard will suffice or a daily walk always on a leash will suffice this big guy.  With adequate exercise, he can make himself at home in any environment, from a city condo to a country estate. He prefers the comforts of home and the presence of his family and will do his best to be a lap dog.

Care & Grooming

The Mastiff requires minimal grooming. Bathing or dry shampooing should be done when necessary.  Dead and loose hairs should be removed with a rubber brush when the Mastiff is shedding.  As with all very large dogs, a comfy bed is always recommended and greatly appreciated by the dog.
