KEESHOND

Bright, Friendly, Lively

Breed Overview

The Keeshond is a dog with roots seeded in Holland. The Keeshond is an old breed working the canals and rivers on barges during the 17 & 18th centuries.  The “Kees”, as they are lovingly referred to, remain a symbol of Dutch Patriotism. Distant and closest relatives are the German Spitzes, Samoyed, and Pomeranians.  Playful and kindhearted, the Keeshond needs minimal training, therefore making them an ideal pet.

Notably, the breed is a very handsome dog, with a thick double coated coat. That said, this breed lives best in areas with a cooler climate. Loyal and accepting, the Keeshond bonds tightly with their family and are indoor dogs. That said, they are good with kids and other household pets as well.

This is an active breed that needs a moderate amount of exercise.  A home with a yard is ideal, however, a good long walk each day will suffice. Indoor and outdoor playtime will keep them happy. With that said they can live comfortably in either an apartment or home in the country.

Care & Grooming

The Kees are noted for their beautiful, thick, furry coat. They will shed twice per year, up to 3 weeks at a time. Coat colors are usually grey, black, and creme in marked variations. Each week they will need a few good brush outs to keep the matting to a minimal. Bathe as frequent as weekly, and not longer than 8 weeks.

Specifically, proper grooming and maintenance will set the foundation for a healthy skin and coat. That said, nail trimming, ear cleaning, trimming the paw pads, anal glands, and proper dental will keep your Keeshond in good health. A high quality diet will also be necessary.
