IRISH WOLFHOUND
Even-Tempered, Sweet, Gentle Nature

Breed Overview
The Irish Wolfhound is a very old breed. In fact, the breed may have been brought to Ireland as early as 7000 BC. They were originally developed from war hounds that were used for hunting and guarding.
Developed to hunt and to guard, they made Ireland’s wolves almost extinct.

Life Expectancy
The breed has a life expectancy of 6-8 years.
Size & Activity Level
Considering this dog’s great size, the Wolfhound is known for his gentle nature and good manners. At maturity, this breed will range from 110 to 180 pounds.
This dog remains calm indoors, but due to his giant size, apartment living is not suited for this breed.
For exercise, a long daily walk, or an opportunity to run full-on in a traffic-free area will keep them in good health. Wolfhounds will adapt to your level of activity, but they shouldn’t be allowed to become couch potatoes.
Care & Grooming
The Wolfhound has a rough coat that is especially wiry and long over the eyes and beneath the jaw. However, extensive grooming is needed to give the dog a perfect appearance in the show ring.
However, for a pet owner, the coat is easy to maintain. There’s just a lot of dog to groom. Give a good brushing once or twice a week to remove dead hairs and shedding will remain low. A bath is needed rather infrequently, or when they get stinky.
The rest is basic care. Trim the nails, as needed, usually every week or two. Brush the teeth frequently with a vet-approved pet toothpaste for good overall health and fresh breath.
