Breed Overview
Originating in the Pyrenees Mountain, this sheep guarding dogs ancestry dates back over 10,000 years ago. The Great Pyrenees was a breed developed to create a dog who would aid shepherds.
Furthermore, his ancestors are thought to have arrived in the Pyrenees Mountains around 3000 B.C..
The Great Pyrenees was considered a dog owned by peasants. However, King Louie XIV declared this breed the Royal Dog of France. For example, the French nobility began to acquire the Great Pyrenees and use them to guard their estates.
Consequently, it takes this breed a few years to mature from puppyhood. They are calm, loving, good-natured and make excellent watchdogs and guardians. They will protect their family at any cost. This breed will make good friends with any child, visitor, or animal as well as a comfy blanket to snuggle with. They make good therapy dogs as well.>

Size & Activity Level
The Great Pyrenees will grow to 85-160 pounds and are part of the Working Group.
For fear of roaming your neighborhood, a 4-6 foot fence is necessary for this breed. Because he was used as a roaming dog in the Pyrenees Mountains protecting his flocks, he needs territory to roam. Bred as a big, hardy dog who loves cool and colder temperatures and capable of lugging gear, they require a daily dose of good exercise.
They love long walks and hikes, however, warm temperatures are not their friend. They must be kept cool as heat can irritate their skin.
Care & Grooming
Expect to see white hairs on your clothing and home, since Great Pyrenees can be heavy shedders. By the same token, their coats are weather-resistant, coarse hairs that can be straight or wavy. Usually, white in color, however tan, gray, reddish, or light yellow colors are possible. These dogs will need a good brushing weekly and more during shedding times. Baths can be infrequent or when smelly. Generally, little grooming is necessary.
