Breed Overview

The Dogue de Bordeaux, sometimes called the French Mastiff, is an ancient French breed where they guarded estates and hunted large game. They are massive and muscular, known for having a huge head and loose fitting skin. This powerful breed tends to be protective but not aggressive. These traits along with their self-assured and territorial tendencies make for a great guard dog.

Early and frequent socialization is important for this breed. They have a strong prey drive and should be introduced to other pets early. Their size makes them difficult for new dog owners to manage and needs a confident and capable leader.

Despite his fearless temperament, they make affectionate and devoted family members. They are remarkably gentle with children. A DDB will expect to share your space on the couch and bed. Their size alone makes them unsuited for small space living. This breed will snore, wheeze, and snort as well as pass gas like a champ.

This breed has an exceptionally short lifespan, averaging between 5 and 8 years.

Size & Activity Level

The Dogue de Bordeaux is an extra large working breed. Standard has them starting at 99 pounds, with no upper limit noted. Exercise needs to be monitored at they overheat easily. This huge dog has a low activity and laid back attitude who will enjoy short walks and playtimes.  He will love to sit at your feet leaning his massive weight against you.

Care & Grooming

The Dogue de Bordeaux has a coat that is short, fine, and soft to touch. They tend to be average shedders. There will be drool. Lots of drool. Keep a hand towel close by to keep the slime under control. This is a brachycephalic breed who dislikes the heat and will need a cool place and plenty of water on warm days. Be sure to wipe out those awesome wrinkles and carefully dry the folds to head off skin infections.
