Breed Overview

The Collie is a large herding dog originating in Scotland. This breed is devoted to and protective of their family. Playful and gentle they are great companions for children. They are good watchdogs and will sound the alarm with a bark, but are not aggressive. These distinctive-looking long and lean dogs come in two coat varieties, rough and smooth. This breed is highly trainable, gentle, loyal, intelligent, and make perfect pets. Their gentleness and devotion also make them very compatible with children. They are often more suitable as watchdogs than as guard dogs, though the individual personalities of the breed will vary.

The life expectancy of the Collie is 10-14 years.

Size & Activity Level

The standard size for the breed is 50-75 pounds. The active collie is playful and enjoys romping off-leash. With plenty of daily exercise, they will adapt well to family life and remain relatively inactive when indoors. That being said, Collies can live comfortably in the city or country.

Care & Grooming

Regular brushing will keep their coat clean and free of tangles. Plan for extra brushing when the soft undercoat is shedding. Most owners prefer professional grooms rather than the do it yourself. They are sensitive to many medications including anesthesia and the ingredient in heartworm medication.
