Breed Overview

It has been said the Chow Chows origin remains unknown. However, it is believed they are an ancient breed who has lived in northern China and Mongolia for possibly thousands of years. The Chow Chow is an impressive looking dog, with a beautiful mane as impressive as a loon. Indeed he can look mean or aggressive, but a well raised Chow is not. With benefits of once being kept in imperial Chinese kennels, these dogs are dignified and aloof.

Considering that Chows can have a disposition of aloof, reserved and independent, they play well with their people. They tend to mind their own business and stay clear of trouble. They have no interest in strangers and will protect their home. With this in mind owners must start to socialize early for this breed.

During the 1920s, Chows made their way to the White House where President Calvin Coolidge kept a pair. Other famous fans: Sigmund Freud and his daughter Anna, Elvis Presley, and most recently Martha Stewart, who’s Chows sometimes appear with her on her television shows.

Life Expectancy

The life expectancy of a Chow is 13-16 years.

Size & Activity Level

Chows have an average weight of 45-70 pounds and known for their blue-black tongues. They belong to the Non-Sporting Group.

This breed does not need a lot of exercise but likes being outdoors. Keep them indoors in hot weather since they have a low tolerance. A few good daily walks will suffice as well as a good-sized yard to run in. Also, Chows should always live indoors and never outside in a kennel. They can be well suited for apartment life or suburbia.

Care & Grooming

The Chow has 2 types of coats:

• Rough, as this is most common type, and;
• Smooth, as it’s hard and dense.

The most common colors are red, black blue and cream. These dogs need regular brushing as well as monthly baths to keep him fresh smelling. With this in mind, ears, nails, and teeth will need a regular check up as well.
