Small, Alert, Active

Breed Overview

In short, the  Chihuahua is descended from an ancient breed, a dog highly prized by Aztec royalty. According to AKC, they are one of the most popular breeds. To sum it up, this breed is small and fierce.  Deeply loyal and highly protective of their family, all in all, they make excellent watchdogs. They are sensitive and thrive on affection and companionship. Chihuahuas do well with one owner and not recommended for small children.

Life Expectancy

The Chihuahua has a lifespan of 10-18 years. This is the longest life span for any size dog.

Size & Activity Level

The Chihuahua is the smallest of all breeds. They range in size from 4-6 pounds. They are part of the Toy Group.

To begin with, this breed is an excellent choice for apartments dwellers. Exercise needs can be met indoor with toys and play sessions. Chihuahuas love walks, supervised romps around the yard, and retrieving toys. Generally speaking, they will play until they drop so be cautious of this by monitoring their activity levels.

Care & Grooming

On the whole, grooming needs are simple. Brush weekly with a rubber grooming mitt or a brush. Chihuahuas shed small amounts year-round, but shed more heavily in spring and fall. Bathe occasionally when needed to keep smelling fresh.
Monthly nail clipping and ear cleaning are necessary. Teeth should be brushed regularly. Provide chew toys and hard bones to help strengthen gums and remove tartar.
