Breed Overview

The Chesapeake Bay Retriever originated as a water dog used for hunting ducks. Commonly called Chessies,they are bright and alert with courageous nature, making them super watchdogs. This breed tends to be stubborn, while preferring to think for himself. Hence thes dogs need consistent training. Tough and tenacious, they were bred to be serious hunting dogs. With that said, they can withstand the icy waters of the Chesapeake Bay, but love to end their days with the family.

The life expectancy of the Chesapeake Bay Retriever is 12-15 years.

Size & Activity Level

The Chesapeake Bay Retriever has an average size of 50-80 pounds. They are part of the Sporting Group. Chessies need a good deal of exercise and are powerful swimmers who use their tail as a rudder. They are pure hunting dogs who live to swim and retrieve. Despite being quiet active, indoors they tend to be calm and relaxed.

Care & Grooming

The Chessie’s oily double coat is water resistant and has a “doggy odor”. Chesapeake Bay Retrievers are heavy spring shedders who benefit from frequent brushing. Always give the Chessie a quick fresh water rinse after swimming, but limit baths to maintain their coat’s water resistance.
