The Shetland Sheepdog was bred to be a guard dog for farmers in Scotland's Shetland Islands. The Sheltie is an eager to please and hard working breed. These intelligent dogs prefer to be with their people, making great family companions. A member of the Herding Group who loves to have a job. Intelligence and athletic ability help them excel in dog sports and agility events. They get bored easily, so be sure to provide plenty of mental exercises as well as physical. The Shetland Sheepdog can range in size from 20-40 pounds. They are a small but active working breed needing plenty of room to run. Agility, endurance, and speed make them natural athletes.

Care & Grooming

The Sheltie's beautiful feathered long coat sheds heavily and will need frequent and thorough brushing. The hair behind the ears tends to matte and will need extra attention. The coat sheds dirt and repels water so baths are on an as-needed basis.
