The life expectancy of the Miniature Australian Shepherd is 12-16 years. They are generally a healthy, hardy breed.
Average weight for a Mini Australian Shepherd is 20-40 pounds. They are part of the Herding Group. Standard Australian Shepherds will average 40-60 pounds, so they are about half that size. Even though they are small, a lot of exercise is necessary. They enjoy tons of play combining agility, strength, and stamina. Also, they will need to be kept occupied. Given that, they are perfect for active individuals and families who love outdoor activities. Smart and obedient, these dogs are not difficult to train. They are a hardy, sturdy dog breed. Finally, apartments are not ideal homes due to their high energy level.
A Mini Australian Shepherd has a medium-length, water-resistant coat. Moreover, his coat will keep him warm and dry in rain or snow. However, these dogs do shed. In fact, in Spring and Fall, they will shed their coat. Regular brushing will help keep this manageable. Baths will only be needed every 4-6 weeks. If they are mostly indoors, that number moves to 3-4 months. Also, as with all dogs, nails, ears, and teeth need monthly cleaning to maintain optimum health. They are an all around healthy breed.
