Breed Overview
The Maltese breed is the oldest of all European Toy breeds. Originating from the Mediterranean Island of Malta around 2,000 years ago. The breed remained isolated on the island for centuries, keeping their bloodline pure. A regal breed, always white in color, they became popular with the upper class. Marie Antoinette and Josephine Bonaparte were Maltese owners. Maltese made their way to America in the late 1800s and became instantly popular.
These dogs are loving, loyal, and playful. They are smart, happy, crave attention, and love to be cuddled but are not exceptionally needy. They get along with older children as well as other dogs and cats. Notably they make a great pet for all lifestyle types.

The breed has a life expectancy of 12 - 15 years.
Size & Activity Level
Part of the Toy Group, Maltese have an average size is 4 - 8 pounds. Being active and playful, however they do not need a lot of additonal exercise. Adapting well to apartment living is a breeze. While enjoying long walks, they love playing indoors or outside. Maltese should always be supervised with young children since they are smalla and fragile. Easily mobile, they love to keep you company on your daily travels. Particularly a favorite among young girls and women who love to show off their Maltese's chic outfits.
Care & Grooming
This breed does not shed. They have beautiful, long white silky hair, which is their trademark. Daily brushing and combing will prevent matting and keep them at their best. Most Maltese owners prefer professional grooming. However, due to their small size you can bathe yourself on a regular basis. Also to note, using shampoo for white dogs will make their coats bright and shiny. Keeping their eyes clean from tear stains is also important. Overall, this breed is easy going and quiet the loyal companion.
