Breed Overview

The Border Collie is descended from a type of collie found in the British Isles. They have been around as long as humans. These dogs are a medium-sized dog, bred to control flocks of sheep.

A highly trainable and ideal working dog, they excel in canine sports such as agility, obedience, flying disc, and many others.  The uniqueness of this breed will herd anything that moves, including sheep, squirrels, kids, cats, and even cars!  He is known for his intense stare, which is how he controls his flock. The breed requires much more daily physical exercise and mental stimulation than other breeds. They possess a supernatural amount of stamina and energy. Many consider the Border Collie to be the most intelligent dog.

He gets along with children and other pets.  His instinct to herd will cause him to nip, chase, and bark at kids and animals. His herding instincts need to be directed and controlled.

Life Expectancy

The life expectancy for this breed is 12-17 years.

Size & Activity Level

A Border Collie is fully grown at 27-45 pounds.  A medium size dog, they are part of the Herding Group.  A key point to note is this energetic breed thrives on activity, and will keep any owner on his toes. With that said, their intense mental and physical stamina is impressive, causing them to need plenty of elbow room. In any event they make great companion animals for an active owner.

Care & Grooming

Border Collies have a weather resistant double coat which varies from smooth to rough. Since shedding is frequent, they will need weekly brushing. Additionally, bathe only as needed when he is real dirty or smells stinky.

The quality of dog food you buy also makes a big difference. The better the dog food, the further it will go toward nourishing a healthy dog. How much he eats depends on his size and activity level. Like people, dogs are all individuals.
