The Bluetick Coonhound has a long history in the United States from Colonial times. They are also the state dog of Tennessee. Though originally bred to hunt raccoons, however, their intensity toward prey can extent to opossums, bobcats, and even cougars. With superb hunting skills, they are beloved as hunting companions.
However, today, with their deep loyalty and affection toward their owners, they are a super companion dog. Notably, this smart, sensible dog enjoys the company of children and other household pets. Most suited for an active family, this dogs loves everything to do with outside activity.

Size & Activity Level
The Bluetick Coonhound will range in size from 45-80 pounds, with males on the heavier end. They are part of the AKC Hound Group since 2009.
Care & Grooming
This is a hardy hound who loves a lot of hard exercise. The ideal owner would take them hiking, jogging, hunting or swimming. Their need for plenty of exercise is a constant in order to keep them manageable.
That said, this dog is not a good choice for city dwellers and apartment living. Green acres is where they want to live!
Finally, this breed is an energetic, natural born hunter, with a strong sense of smell whose nose can lead them to trouble. A secure yard is necessary for this born hunter. This hound is overall a healthy dog.
