Breed Overview

The Bloodhound is working breed that has been used as a scent hunter since medieval Europe. His “blooded line” represents his long lineage. The characteristic deep folds and long ears help funnel scents to his nose.  A Bloodhound’s amazing endurance will allow them to follow a scent trail for miles.

They are affectionate and love their people, especially kids. Their kind and gentle temperament make for good-natured companions. Bloodhounds are pack dogs and need company. They are very smart but independent, with a “what’s in it for me” attitude.

Life Expectancy

The life expectancy of a Bloodhound is 10-14 years.

Size & Activity Level

The large breed Bloodhound will grow to 80-110 pounds. Calm by nature but far from lazy, these active working dogs will enjoy long pack walks. A secure fence is a must for them, as well as a sturdy leash when out of the yard.

Care & Grooming

Bloodhounds have a short easy care coat.  They are known to shed heavily, sling slobber, and have a distinctive “houndy” odor.  Their long ears and deep wrinkles will require frequent cleaning to prevent infection.
